Advanced Australian Medical Coding Program

An advanced practical program in Australian medical coding focused on reading medical records, analysing clinical cases, identifying diagnoses and procedures, and applying ICD-10-AM, ACHI and ACS to coding decisions.

  • Recorded and available for remote study
  • 10 training sessions · more than 35 hours

What will you gain from this program?

Move beyond knowing coding rules and learn how to apply them when reading medical records, analysing clinical cases and making coding decisions.

Reading medical records through a coding lens
  • Extract coding-relevant information from the medical record instead of treating a diagnosis in isolation.
  • Distinguish the final diagnosis from differential diagnoses and information that is not sufficient on its own to assign a code.
  • Identify the documentation that affects which diagnoses and procedures should be coded.
Turning documentation into a coding decision
  • Identify the principal diagnosis and additional diagnoses based on the documented case.
  • Link diagnoses and procedures to the appropriate codes using ICD-10-AM and ACHI.
  • Apply Australian Coding Standards when making coding decisions.
Applying coding across diverse clinical cases
  • Practise on cases from multiple clinical specialties rather than isolated code examples.
  • Work through inpatient and outpatient scenarios that require case analysis before coding.
  • Handle cases that may involve multiple diagnoses or procedures and apply the relevant coding rules.
Reviewing coding accuracy
  • Review assigned codes and verify that they are consistent with the documentation and applicable standards.
  • Practise identifying documentation gaps or details that can change the coding decision.
  • Build a more systematic approach to analysing cases and reviewing the reasoning behind coding decisions.

Who is this program for?

Graduates of a foundational medical coding program or equivalent
Medical coders developing practical coding skills
Claims, medical records and RCM professionals with basic coding knowledge
Healthcare practitioners and graduates with a foundation in Australian medical coding

Program Topics

What will you learn in this program?

The curriculum moves from Australian coding standards into clinical specialties and advanced case types, with practical application across diagnosis and procedure coding.

General Standards & Australian Coding Fundamentals
  • General standards for diseases and interventions, coding essentials, and application of ICD-10-AM, ACHI and ACS.
  • Respiratory diseases and infectious and parasitic diseases, with coding rules applied to clinical examples.
  • Core principles used to identify and code diagnoses and procedures within the documented episode of care.
Coding Across Body Systems & Clinical Categories
  • Mental and behavioural disorders, paediatric cases, and diseases of the nervous system.
  • Diseases of the ear, eye and nose, including related diagnoses and procedures.
  • Digestive, endocrine, nutritional and metabolic conditions, including diabetes-related coding scenarios.
Specialised Cases & Advanced Clinical Areas
  • Pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium, together with gynaecological cases and their coding rules.
  • Skin and subcutaneous-tissue conditions, musculoskeletal cases, and diseases of the circulatory system.
  • Z codes, factors influencing health status, follow-up care, rehabilitation and non-acute care.
Complex Cases & Coding Quality
  • Selected neoplasm-related coding cases, including situations where site, morphology, history or follow-up status affects code selection.
  • Selected injury, poisoning and external-cause scenarios covered within the clinical modules.
  • Review of coding accuracy, documentation and standards, with practical case work that supports preparation for the HIMAA exam.

Accredited Program Completion Certificate

An Oxford Academy Body (OAB-UK) accredited certificate of completion, valid for 3 years, issued after successful completion of the program requirements and final assessment.

The HIMAA exam is separate from the program certificate. The program supports preparation for the HIMAA exam, while registration and exam fees are handled directly with HIMAA.

Important Questions Before Registering

Do I need to complete a foundational medical coding program first?

You do not need to have completed Medura’s foundational program specifically. However, this is an advanced program and assumes a basic understanding of Australian medical coding, including ICD-10-AM and ACHI. If you have completed a foundational medical coding program or equivalent training, this program is designed as the next step into practical application.

How do I study the program and how much is available now?

The program is recorded and delivered remotely. It consists of 10 training sessions totalling more than 35 hours. Most sessions are currently available after enrolment, and the remaining sessions are being added progressively until the program is complete.

How is this different from the Foundational Medical Coding Program?

The foundational program builds the core understanding of medical coding and how to search for codes. This advanced program assumes that foundation and moves into medical-record reading, case analysis, diagnosis and procedure coding, and application of Australian standards across multiple clinical specialties, with training that supports preparation for the HIMAA exam.

What do I receive after completing the program?

After completing the program requirements and passing the final assessment, you receive an Oxford Academy Body (OAB-UK) accredited certificate of completion valid for 3 years. The program supports preparation for the HIMAA exam, but the HIMAA exam itself is separate and registration and exam fees are handled directly with HIMAA.
